About Us
MVP Academy is located in Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i. The origin of this institution is rooted in Wai‘anae-Mākaha, O‘ahu where the founder – Coach Bubs – was born and raised. The Wai’anae Canal was previously a lush kahawai (river) full of ‘ama’ama (baby mullet), where Wai’anae gets its name: Wai (fresh water) and ‘anae (mature mullet). The mākahā is the gate of the loko i‘a (fishpond) where the ‘ama‘ama would enter. Both Kapa‘a and Mākaha were ‘āina famous for their loko i‘a in ancient Hawai‘i, and the ‘anae (mullet) was one of the abundant species cultivated in this thriving aquaculture system. The water in the loko i‘a is brackish and was contained by a lava and coral kuapā (wall). This wall offered safety for the ‘ama‘ama from predators where they could grow to be strong ‘anae. The athletes of MVP Academy are the fish, pua‘ama, ‘ama’ama or ‘anae – represented by the fish tails in the logo – and the campus, its staff and the community being the loko i‘a.
